Got plastic? We have an art project for you!

What’s special about this particular project is that is is part of a collaborative flower mural right outside the front doors of the i.d.e.a. Museum! So next time you’re in downtown Mesa, we hope you stop by and attach the flowers you create at home. And, we hope you enjoy the creativity of other members of our community, who have recently added to our mural.

Collaborative projects such as this one can bring us together creating a greater sense of community, which is extra important in these days when we can’t all be physically together.

Ana, who is part of the education team at the i.d.e.a. Museum, shares this final Together in the Desert art project that’s part of Mesa Family Takeout Night, which highlights downtown Mesa restaurants.

Getting started

Materials:

  • Plastic bottle or cup
  • Scissors
  • Glue or glue dots
  • Paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Various decorative items

Create!

1.  Start by cutting your plastic bottle or cup to create your flower petals. (See video for demonstration) Make several cuts, depending on the number of petals you’d like.

2. Bend the petals back. When you do, you can trim the edges to customize the look of your flowers.

3. Paint your petals. In the case of plastic cups, sometimes they are already colored, so all you need to do is add your personal touch with beads, yarn, foam stickers, etc.

4. Attach a pipe cleaner or punch a hole in your petal and string yarn through it. This way you can attach it to the mural.
