This Saturday, Feb. 15, experience creative hands-on activities, art and storytelling at the i.d.e.a. Museum for free as part of the 7th Annual Southwest Maker Fest (SWMF). The collaborative one-day festival, featuring creative experiences and entertainment, takes place in Downtown Mesa along Pepper Place between Robson and Macdonald streets.

Visitors coming to the i.d.e.a. Museum during Southwest Maker Fest will experience artful storytelling at spring exhibit, Art of the Story. Free museum admission begins at 9 a.m., when doors open. SWMF booths will open at 10 a.m. Also, the museum will feature a special storytelling event, courtesy of the South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute.

When: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2019  (SWMF begins at 10 a.m.)

SMCC Storytelling Institute performances: 

  • 11:30 a.m. – Riddle Stories for Creative Thinking and Problem Solving
  • 12:30 p.m. – “We Did It” – Stories of Team Triumphs 
  • 1:30 p.m. – Riddle Stories for Creative Thinking and Problem Solving
  • 2:30 p.m. – “We Did It” – Stories of Team Triumphs

Additionally, experience the rain forest-themed black light room and recent additions in the HUB Gallery. Little ones ages 4 and younger will find several imaginative play experiences, as well as soft blocks and hands-on art, in ArtVille (a socks-only space).


The museum’s spring exhibition is sponsored by POGO Pass, the City of Mesa, the i.d.e.a. Museum Foundation; and the Arizona Commission on the Arts, which receives support from the state of Arizona and the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional program support provided by Wells Fargo Foundation (Access for All fund).

Southwest Maker Fest is a signature event of the Arizona SciTech Festival and is presented in partnership with the Downtown Mesa Festival of the Arts. The event is held under the auspices of Ultimate Imagination Inc., the 501(c)3 non-profit arm of the Downtown Mesa Association. Event sponsors include HeatSync Labs, The Collaboratory, i.d.e.a.
